3.17 For each pre-recorded time-based media, is the presentation of captions controllable by the user (excluding special cases)?

Official methodology to test criterion 3.17

Test 1 (3.17)

iOS
  1. Identify pre-recorded time-based media with captions on the screen.
  2. Modify the subtitle presentation settings from the platform:
    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning > Style;
    • Select Create a style to define a personalised and recognisable subtitle style.
    • Check that the Override custom settings parameter at the bottom of the screen is deactivated.
    • Define one or more caption presentation parameters from the customisation options provided by the platform, for example: caption size, colour, caption border style, background colour, background opacity, etc. (Note: the standard does not give a precise list of parameters that must be defined, so the possibility of modifying a single caption characteristic is sufficient to make the criterion compliant).
  3. Check that the settings defined at platform level are applied to the captions.
  4. If this is not the case, look for a feature on the screen that allows you to change the caption presentation settings (on-screen or directly from the media player).
  5. Check that the defined parameters are applied to the captions.
  6. If this is the case, the criterion is validated.
