Real-time text communication
This term is defined by more than one standard, and the wording differs. Each definition below is the one that applies to that standard’s criteria.
Definition in RAWeb 1.1
Real-time text (RTT) communication is a form of written communication which allows the other party to read the text being written by the sender, without waiting for the sender to confirm (e.g. by pressing the enter key).
Collaborative editing tools (e.g. online office suites) are an example of the operating principle of real-time text (RTT) communication: the various participants can see the texts being written and modified by each other at the same time as the modifications are being applied to the texts. This is very different from a common online conversation system (such as instant messaging), which only transmits a written message to the other party when a key or button is pressed (for example, the enter key).

Criteria in RAWeb 1.1
- 17.2 — Does every web application that enables two-way voice communication have real-time text communication functionality?
- 17.3 — For each web application that enables two-way voice communication and real-time text, can both modes be used simultaneously?
- 17.4 — For each real-time text (RTT) functionality, can the messages be identified (excluding special cases)?
- 17.6 — Does each real-time text communication web application that can interact with other real-time text communication applications comply with the interoperability rules in force?
- 17.7 — For each real-time text communication (RTT) web application, the transmission time for each input unit is 500ms or less. Is this rule respected?

Real-time text (RTT) is a mode of written communication which allows users to read the text being written by the sender, without waiting for the sender to validate (for example with the enter key).
Collaborative editing tools (e.g. online office suites) are an example of how RTT works: the various parties involved can see the texts written and modified by each of them at the same time as the changes are applied to the texts. This is very different from a common online conversation system (such as instant messaging), which only transmits a written message to interlocutors when a key or button is pressed (for example, the enter key).

Criteria in RAAM 1.1
- 15.2 — Does each application that supports two-way voice communication have real-time text communication functionality?
- 15.3 — For each application that allows two-way voice communication and real-time text, are both modes usable simultaneously?
- 15.4 — For each real-time text communication functionality, can the messages be identified (excluding special cases)?
- 15.6 — Does each real-time text communication application that can interact with other real-time text communication applications comply with the interoperability rules in force?
- 15.7 — For each application that supports real-time text (RTT) communication, the transmission delay for each input unit is 500ms or less. Is this rule respected?
